Lime Concrete

Lime concrete is composite mixture lime as binding material, sand as fine aggregate and gravel as coarse aggregate in appropriate proportions. Lime is used as a binding material in cement mortar. It is used in the form of cement putty or Hydraulic lime.

The ratio of lime concrete : The only viable option is a mixture of 1:1:6 ratio – One part Sanghi Cement, one part lime and six part sand.

Properties of Lime Concrete

Ø  It resists weathering effect.
Ø  It takes time to set.
Ø  Lime is cheaper and available easily.
Ø  Lime Concrete used in the bases of construction bears sufficient loads.
Ø  It gives good workability and desired plasticity.
Ø  It consumes less energy for production of lime and emits less carbon dioxide through carbonation process compared to conventional Portland cement thus it is environment friendly product.
Ø  It obtains less compressive strength at the initial stage of setting.

Uses of Lime Concrete in Construction

Ø  It has low thermal conductivity used for flooring at the ground level of old buildings.
Ø  Using lime concrete foundation base of load bearing walls can be constructed.
Ø  For flooring purpose lime concrete mixed with an insulating material like lightweight clay or pumice.
Ø  Lime concrete can be used for the construction of temporary structures or unimportant structures which are built for the ease of construction of permanent structures like tunnels, bridges, retaining walls, dams etc.
Ø  Foundation base of load-bearing walls can be constructed using Lime concrete.
Ø  Before 20th century masonry was done using lime concrete due to elasticity of the lime mortar which allowed expansion or contraction of the walls without damaging masonry units.

Drawbacks of Lime Concrete

Ø  In today’s world where people do not have time it is tough to use lime cement because it takes much time to cure.
Ø  Lime cement does not harden in water but stays soft so there are the cases where it is not preferable to use.
Ø  Hydraulic lime usually gains strength in time greater than the time in which cement concrete gains same value of strength.
